The "Thresholds" in Jean Giono's Regain: The Myth of "Pan"

Abstract
This article examines how the myth of Pan permeated Jean Giono's imagination before and after writing Regain, and how this novel's extension into other texts reveals this myth's influence. This phenomenon is consistent with what Gérard Genette (1987) defines as a parallel text or paratext, particularly in respect to the original (authorial) introduction. These textual "thresholds" comprise an interview, two manuscripts of the novel, and correspondence from the author. Therefore, the analysis of these paratexts reveals an extension of the novel that sheds light on certain fundamental elements of the main text. Drawing on Giono's own words, it is possible to identify clues pointing to a direct link between his work and his aesthetic intentions. This approach grants the researcher to better insight into the influence of Greek myth in Regain, as well as the relevance of shaping the narrative according to a heightened aesthetic.

Résumé
Cet article analyse la manière dont le mythe de Pan a imprégné l'imaginaire de Jean Giono avant et après l’écriture de Regain, à travers l'extension de ce roman dans d'autres textes. Ce phénomène s'accorde avec ce que Gérard Genette (1987) définit comme un texte parallèle ou paratexte, notamment en ce qui concerne l'introduction originale (auctorial). Parmi ces « seuils » textuels figurent un entretien, deux manuscrits du roman, et des correspondances de l’auteur. L’analyse de ces paratextes révèle une extension du roman qui éclaire certains éléments fondamentaux du texte principal. En s’appuyant sur les propos mêmes de Giono, il est possible de dégager des indices d’un lien direct entre son œuvre et ses intentions esthétiques. Cette approche permet de mieux comprendre l’influence du mythe grec dans Regain ainsi que l’importance de la mise en forme du récit selon une esthétique exacerbée.
